Sourcing and
Procurement
Including contracting and purchasing, procurement is the link between buyers and sellers across supply chains.
The Procurement and Supply Manager's Desk Reference by Fred Sollish and John Semanik
I’ve come to greatly appreciate this reference book. Structured more as a dictionary, it covers the overall procurement discipline, including competitive bids (RFx), vendor management (e.g. QBRs), and purchase orders (POs). For experienced professionals, it’s a terrific brush up on fundamental concepts too!
Contract Drafting and Negotiation for Entrepreneurs and Business Professionals by Paul A. Swegle
For strategic sourcing professionals negotiating high-stakes deals, I cannot recommend this book enough! Paul Swegle is a business-savvy general counsel having represented startups and large businesses alike. His book covers more dense provisions from warranties to intellectual property that are critical to executing a favorable agreement.
IHS Markit Supply Manager
My preferred choice for global market intelligence. Combining geopolitics, macroeconomics, and even climate risks, IHS Markit has been instrumental for making educated business decisions. If your employer is able to pay for a subscription, the wealth of information will quickly prove the investment.
I would specifically recommend the Supply Manager reports for commodity intelligence.
Institute of Supply Management (ISM) Report On Business
ISM provides free reports with key performance indicators on the manufacturing and services sectors. Their reliable economic indicators provide guidance to sourcing professionals to make education decision.
I use this for quick information on commodity pricing, production capacities, inventory levels at the global level.
