Recommended Books

The most recommended literature for beginners to supply chain.

The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt

Although it is an older work (1964), no other book has been recommend more than The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement. This timeliness thriller novel has influenced operations management for decdes. It was even recently adopted into a graphic novel!

The Box by Mark Levinson

In a more recent work (2006), The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger, former editor of The Economist, Marc Levinson, explains how the container transformed economic geography, slashed transportation costs, and made the boom in global trade possible. Undoubtedly a modern classic.

The New (Ab)Normal by Yossi Sheffi

A personal favorite, MIT Professor Yossi Sheffi’s The New (Ab)Normal: Reshaping Business and Supply Chain Strategy beyond Covid-19 maps how the pandemic impacted business, supply chains, and society. He exposes the critical role supply chains played in helping people, governments, and companies to manage one of the greatest crises of this generation.

Supply Chain Management: Strategy, Planning, and Operation by Sunil Chopra

The “Holy Bible of Supply Chain”, as some have claimed. This textbook is dense, covering practically all elements of the supply chain. I would highly recommend this textbook for an academic setting. It covers enough material for an undergraduate-level program, ideally broken into a few sections given the density of the material. It is a fanatstic resource, and one that I still reference to this day.

Unlike other sources, this website does not require a paid subscription. It’s an undervalued resource for articles on all things supply chain with well-cited sources and top-notch writing. I cannot recommend this one enough!

Bloomberg Businessweek

Although not focused on supply chain specifically, this weekly magazine from Bloomberg covers noteworthy events in global business, politics, economics, and technology that undoubtedly impact supply chains. It’s a fantastic weekend read to prepare for the workweek.

ASCM Supply Chain Now

Official magazine of ASCM (fka APICS) published each quarter. Members receive this magazine for free as part of their membership. I would recommend this magazine above all other supply chain magazines.
