What is Supply Chain?
In essence, supply chain is the global flow of goods, services, capital, and information. Although this is not a perfect list, I hope it helps explain this marvelously complex discipline.
WSJ Documentary Why Global Supply Chains May Never Be the Same
Against other geopolitical noise in the supply chain crisis, I appreciate how this documentary focuses on frontline workers. Without the truck drivers, longshoremen, warehouse pickers, and delivery drivers, there would be no supply chain.
Wikipedia Supply Chain Management
As simple as it may sound, the first and foremost resource I recommend is none other than Wikipedia. Reading through this article is a brief yet well-developed introduction to the history, importance, and functions of supply chains. It’s current, well-cited, and free. What’s better than that?
Supply Chain Management by Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl
Exceeding 500 pages, I’m not recommend reading through the entire textbook. The first few chapters gives an excellent overview of supply chain fundamentals, while later chapters dive deep into specific functions that are also worth reading depending on your interest (and time).
LinkedIn Job Postings
“Supply chain” covers a broad array of disciplines in practically every industry. For that reason alone, I would recommend focusing on specific interests – be it by function, industry, or company – and reading job postings tagged under those keywords. You will discover a high-level overview of the function, responsibilities, and essential skills required for those roles.
